🤩This Week’s “Girl, thanks for telling me!” Topic: Should I Stay or Should I Go?
We pour so much of ourselves into our jobs that it's crucial we find joy and satisfaction in our work. Yet, many of us find ourselves at a crossroads, feeling that our current roles just don't cut it. When I chat with people who are debating whether to stay or go, I always kick off with one key question: “Why are you thinking about leaving your job?” I often hear things like a lack of growth opportunities, culture-misalignment, or a frustrating work-life balance. So, what’s pushing you to consider leaving? Don’t overthink it—just jot down the first things that spring to mind. Making the call to stay or leave has a substantial impact on both your personal life and professional future. This decision is yours alone—there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
FEELING STUCK? Email Ann Marie and we’ll send over Get Her Hired’s Guide to “Should I Stay or Should I Go?”—it’s packed with ideas to help you make a decision that aligns with your goals.
🔥This Week’s Sizzling Job Search Strategy: Don’t be Basic
Recruiters are often overwhelmed with stacks of resumes for each position. So how can you shine brighter than the rest? 99.9% of applicants stick to the basics. Queen, YOU ARE NOT BASIC, so why should your job search strategy be?! Embracing creative strategies can bring your resume to the top of a recruiter’s pile. Open to a new approach? Try sending a personalized video message via LinkedIn. This gesture highlights your interest and sets you apart as someone who goes beyond the conventional, making a memorable impact.
20-Minute Challenge: Send a Video DM
Craft Your Script (5 Minutes): Write a brief, heartfelt script introducing yourself and expressing your passion for the role. Highlight why you are the ideal candidate.
Prepare Your Space (5 Minutes): Ensure the setting reflects the professional and calm demeanor you want to convey.
Practice Your Delivery (5 Minutes): Rehearse your script a few times, aiming for a natural and engaging delivery. Approach this as if you’re sharing your story with a friend. Keep eye contact with the camera to foster a connection.
Record Your Message (3 Minutes): From the LinkedIn App on your phone, go to the recruiters page and send them a message. Record the video in the moment, keeping it about 90 seconds long, letting your genuine enthusiasm shine through.
Send Your Video (2 Minutes): Hit send and follow up with a short written message explaining your interest and what you bring to the role.
Make a mistake? Congratulations you are human. Ask yourself this: what is the worst thing that can happen? Do it and let us know how it goes!
🔢This Week’s Data-Diva Tip: Reviews = Results
I always stress the importance of having a resume that packs a punch, showing clear, quantifiable results. But I hear from so many of you saying, "Kate, how do I even start to quantify what I do?" Here’s a quick tip: Start with your annual goals and performance reviews. These are not just paperwork; they're your goldmine for resume material.
TRY THIS: Think about the goals you've smashed this year. Calculate how you exceeded those expectations and translate it into a metric, for example: you grew, reduced, improved, maintained, decreased, increased something. Pop those numbers right into your cv, resume or LinkedIn profile. Just a heads-up—if any of this info is confidential, tweak it to use approximate percentages. This is how you make your resume stand out in a sea of sameness.
🍳This Week’s Killer Skill: Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence, or EQ, is being the boss of our emotions. It involves recognizing and understanding our feelings, and how they affect others. It’s not just about us —EQ also means sensing and responding to others' emotions effectively. This skill is crucial because it enhances our relationships and our ability to manage social situations. High EQ can lead to better job performance, stronger leadership, and more satisfying interactions. Simply put, it's about being smart with our heart, helping us navigate life's ups and downs more smoothly.
