🤩This week’s “Girl, thanks for telling me!” Topic: ….So Tell Me About Yourself

How 99% of interviews start: “So Tell Me About Yourself ...” How 99% of us reply: “Uh, well, let me read my resume to you.” If you fear that you sound like a resume robot reciting dates and duties ... that's because you do. If you speak for more than 3 minutes (I am going to be the friend that tells you this) you've lost them. But don't give up! There's a fix for this! I created a NEW TOOL to help people answer the "So Tell Me About Yourself" question concisely, in a way that clearly positions your story to express that you're not just looking for any job – you're looking for THIS job. Send Ann Marie an email [email protected] and we will get it out to you ASAP. Give it a try - let me know how it goes for you! And - please share â™» with anyone who could use a hand with this today.

🔥This Week’s Sizzling Job Search Strategy: Is Your LinkedIn Profile Hiding?

20-Minute Challenge: Create “Market-Value” LinkedIn Job Titles

Company’s give us specific titles for internal reasons. But if our reason for using LinkedIn is to find a job, entering a unique title can limit our profile effectiveness.  For instance: Your title at your current company is "Senior Director Sales / GTM Strategy Manager".  Change your title to “Senior Director of Sales” - a much more searchable title - and your profile views will shift.

How To: Change your titles to ones that APPEAR IN THE DROP DOWN when editing your role. There is a high possibility that your exact title will not appear. Pick the one that is CLOSEST to what you did. Then, in the first line of  your experience narrative, write: "Internal Title: Senior Director Sales / GTM Strategy Manager" Some of my clients say - "But isn't that dishonest?" No it's not dishonest. It's smart. You are noting the internal, specific title in the description. You are updating the main title to be one that the LinkedIn search-engine can find.

Check out Kevin Turner’s “How To” for more insights. Do it for each of your job titles. Don't argue. In 10 days, review your analytics and see what happens. Let me know what you learn by doing this!

🔢This Week’s Data-Diva Tip: Do NOT Give a Range When Stating Salary Requirements

Before your first conversation with a recruiter, research the current market value of the job title on Salary.com, Linkedin, Payscale or Glassdoor. Look at the range, from high to low. You might need to look at variations on the job title, for example: Chief Innovation Officer or Senior Vice President, Research and Development. Typically the salaries listed will be BASE pay - that means that the number will not include benefits, bonuses, equity, etc. Pick a number within that range that is a bit of a stretch for you.  I like to start from 30% above my client’s current base salary, then dial up or down from there based on experience, location, industry, size of  organization, etc.

When the recruiter asks your salary requirements, simply state this ONE number. Do NOT give a range.  Why? Because you are worth the top of the range. State, I am looking for “$329,000”. And stop talking. You’ll have anchored yourself at a realistic market value. Negotiate from there.

🍳This Week’s Killer Skill: Business Analytics

Business analytics skills aren’t just a nice-to-have - they are a must-have. The leaders that are confidently advancing are the ones that are using data to drive their strategies and stay ahead of the curve. By using data to inform your decisions, you can cut through the noise and zero in on the things that really matter. You can identify areas where your team is struggling and come up with targeted solutions to get them back on track. You can spot opportunities for growth and innovation that your competitors might be missing. And you can make strategic choices that will set your company up for long-term success. Don't be afraid to embrace the power of business analytics. It might feel intimidating at first, but trust me - once you start seeing the results, you'll wonder how you ever led without it.
