Stop Treating Your Résumé Like a Tombstone
Your resume isn’t a history lesson. It should sell where you’re going next.
🎉 Welcome back to Excited to Share, the weekly newsletter from Get Her Hired where we deliver job search strategies, facts over fear, and tools to help you land your next best role. Let’s get into it.
🔥This Week’s Job Search Strategy: Your Resume Isn’t a Career Obituary
Too many resumes we see are what we call “career chronicles.” They’re long, detailed... and backward-looking.
But here’s the truth: Your resume isn’t meant to be a museum exhibit. It’s a strategic document designed to get you interviews. If it doesn’t reflect who you are now and where you’re headed next, it’s working against you.
Try This:
Before you update another bullet point, get clear on these three things:
✅ Your single job search goal for the next 12 weeks
✅ A messy “Single Source of Truth” doc (where you collect every win, role, result, and training)
✅ What you want to be known for in your next role, not just what you’ve done before
If your career story doesn’t align with your direction, it won’t stand out. You’ll blend in with a billion other profiles on LinkedIn. And we’re not here for that.
🔢This Week’s Data-Diva Tip: Pull the Numbers Together
You know what builds confidence? Not vibes. Evidence.
We worked with a client this week who got nervous applying to a role she loved. Why? Because she didn’t meet every bullet point.
That’s when we pulled out the facts: She’d led global teams. Managed a $3B pipeline. Supported operations for 30,000 employees.
Not ego. Just data.
Try This:
List the biggest numbers you’ve touched - budgets, teams, customers, revenue - and put them in one place. You can feel unsure and be completely qualified. The facts won’t lie.

🧭 This Week’s Perspective Shift: You Are the Proof
Let’s retire the idea that you need to “prove yourself” to hiring managers. If you’re leading with curiosity, facts, and a clear vision, you’re already standing out.
Try This Messaging Framework (for LinkedIn or outreach):
✅ Here are the kinds of problems I’ve solved
✅ Here’s the impact I’ve made
✅ Here’s the kind of help I provide
Simple. Truthful. Effective.

🤩This Week’s “Girl, thanks for telling me!” Topic: Design for the Future
Here’s the thing: We can’t even begin writing a resume until we know where you’re going.
If you want to be a VP, your materials need to sound like a VP. If you’re pivoting industries, your skills need to be positioned as transferable, clearly and confidently.
Try This:
Ask ChatGPT (or your AI of choice):
“What are the key competencies for a [your target role] in [your industry]?”
Look for the patterns. Which skills do you already have? Which ones do you want to build? Use those competencies as a filter to refine your resume, your bullets, and your positioning.
And one more note: Execution is great. But if you're aiming for leadership, don’t lead with “gets stuff done.” Lead with how you think, lead, and move teams forward.
